A Note from Chuck
As you likely know, my ride was ended at 1480 miles by two dogs, who knocked me off the bike, breaking 3 of my ribs, cracking 2 others, and leaving me with many scrapes and bruises. Thank you to all who have sent good wishes. I'm doing well, and though I wasn't able to complete the entire ride, am giving the full pledge to the three organizations--if you pledged, I hope you'll do the same. So, here's how to honor your pledges. Multiply the amount you pledged per mile by the number of miles--2400 was the total, but if you're a stickler, I rode 1480 pre-dogs (the doctor who treated me said each broken rib was worth 300 miles, so you can add those in). Do that for each of the organizations to which you pledged (if you need help remembering your pledge(s), email me). Then make the donation directly to each organization. Here's how:
If you pledged to the Whatcom Community Foundation, go here, make your donation and enter "Chuck's Big Ride" in the comments field.
If you pledged to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation, go here, make your donation, and in the box for "Tribute Gift." Check the button for "In Honor" (thankfully not "In Memory") and put "Chuck's Big Ride" in place of "Person's Name."
If you pledged to the GalvaFoundation of Educational Enrichment (GalFEE),Galva Kid's First is the official nonprofit that will handle the donations for GalFEE. Please send a check, made out to GalFEE in care of Galva Kid's First, 301 NW 4th Avenue, Galva, Illinois, 61434. Mark the comment line for GalFEE as well.
Thank you so much for supporting these three great organizations. They each do great work in a community that is very special to me.
I set out to ride approximately 2400 miles from Bellingham to Galva, Illinois, my hometown, beginning on June 15th.* I pledged $1 per mile to each of three foundations—Whatcom Community Foundation (WCF), Book Industry Foundation (BINC), and Galva Foundation for Educational Enrichment (GalFEE). I'm encouraging you to pledge any amount per mile to the foundation(s) of your choice. A 1¢ pledge would be less than $25, 10¢ would be less than $250, and...well you can do the math. Donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated by these foundations. So please pledge generously. You'll be contacted after the ride*, with the actual miles and how to make your donation. I'll be blogging as often as possible on the ride, and you may follow here.
