Village Books' Donation Program

How Village Books awards Donations

The Village Books Foundation was created in 1987 as a vehicle for returning a portion of its profits to the community. Each year, about 5% of the net profits of the store (a minimum of $1,000) is set aside for donation to various community organizations and causes.

The Foundation has a commitment to Whatcom County – LOCAL – programs and organizations. Preference is given to these requests:  Any organization that promotes literacy , reading, environmental education, promoting awareness of social problems or meeting basic human needs. For example: PTSA groups, North Cascades Institute, Whatcom Literacy Council, the Food Bank, and Womencare Shelter, etc.

To be approved, your organization must be non-partisan and non-commercial. The Foundation prefers to donate gift certificates to Village Books, or books, which may generate greater funds in the fund-raising efforts, thereby expanding the foundation gift beyond the actual dollar amount.

Our decision to fund or refuse a request is not a judgement about the value of the effort of the requesting organization; it is simply an application of the outlined criteria within the parameters of a limited budget.  Furthermore, the denial of one request by a group should not be seen as a reason not to submit a future request.  Any group believing it meets the criteria outlined here is encouraged to submit an application for funding, ad is further encouraged to do so a minimum of 3 weeks in advance of the funding need.
