Village Books and Fairhaven Runners & Walkers are
pleased to announce the 10th Annual 5K
Run/Walk for Literacy on Saturday, June
20th at 9:00 am. Participants will enjoy a combination
road-trail course, with slight grades and beautiful scenery. The race will feature age-group awards and
prizes. There will also be a free kids
1/2-mile fun run before the 5K, beginning on the Village Green.
All proceeds from this 5K event will benefit the Whatcom
Literacy Council. Last year the
event raised over $2000 for the organization.
After the race there will be live music, good company, good
food, awards, and a drawing for random prizes, all on the Fairhaven Village
Green. This 10th annual race also marks
the celebration of Village Books' 29th anniversary, Fairhaven Runners and
Walkers 10th anniversary, and Whatcom Literacy Council's 31 anniversary.
As the region's premier technical running and walking store,
Fairhaven Runners and Walkers informs and inspires people pursuing running and
walking lifestyles. Building community
one book at a time, Village Books provides books and personal service to
customers from all over.
"The event is a great connection for both stores,"
says Village Books co-owner, Chuck Robinson.
"Literacy is obviously very important to us, and Fairhaven Runners
is about running and walking. It's a
perfect opportunity for the two businesses to help a very important
organization in the community."
The Literacy Run/Walk would not be possible without the
generous support from these sponsors: The Colophon Cafe, Copies Now, Haggen Fairhaven
Market, Great Harvest Bread Company, Greater Bellingham Running Club, and Bellingham
Parks and Recreation.
Race-day volunteers are needed. Please contact Nan or
Steve at the numbers above to volunteer.
There will be a volunteer meeting on Friday, June 19th.
Start: 7:00 pm
During the fragile moments of surgery, Seattle anesthesiologist and writer Carol Cassella is not only aware of the scientific intricacies of the human body, but more importantly, understands the emotional complexities patients and doctors face when entering an operating room. Cassella’s debut Oxygen: A Novel, explores universal human hopes and frailties, and the murky boundary where science intersects with the soul. A blend of medical knowledge, the imperfection of humanity and science, suspense and the desire for vindication, it was widely received as a National Bestseller and a July ’08 Indie Next list pick.
