The numerous children of Charles and Emma Darwin eagerly helped Charles with natural history experiments involving flowers, pigeons, worms, and bees. Bees were a favorite Darwin subject, and Darwin’s articles on bees are still cited today. The Humblebee Hunter, recounts a fictionalized version of one of Darwin’s experiments: counting the number of flowers a humblebee (bumblebee) visits in a minute.
Deborah Hopkinson is the author of award-winning books including Stagecoach Sal, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2009; Keep On!, winner of a 2009 Oregon Book Award; and Apples to Oregon, winner of the Golden Kite Award. Like Darwin, she did research involving her family, bending over flowers to watch bees at work. So, any idea as to the number of blossoms a bumblebee visits in one minute?
