At the end of their Peace Corps duty, John and Genevieve Ashford began making plans for travel with the purpose of learning about the Kalahari Bushmen, one of Ashford’s long-time interests. Eventually, he met a prominent activist, and found himself receiving a whirlwind education about Bushmen in the modern world.
John Ashford grew up in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington. After a lengthy career in teaching and as the director of a library he began looking for a change. In 1990, he and his wife Genevieve went to Botswana with the Peace Corps to work as teachers. His stories have appeared in a Peace Corps anthology and Silk Road Review.
