Bellingham veteran Pete Davidson noticed there wasn’t much published about the daily lives of enlisted WWII soldiers in the South Pacific. Based on letters he wrote home at the time and pictures he collected while in the Army Corps of Engineers, his book describes the every day challenges of enlisted men from stateside training (Feb 1943) to service in New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan (Jan. 1946). Included are serious problems coping with dense tropical jungle, heavy rainfall, malaria, serious accidents, high humidity and temperatures, and a limited diet. Pete has donated his materials to the Library of Congress Veterans’ Project.
