POETRY!
In Susan Rich’s collection of poems, The Alchemist’s Kitchen, we accept that mortality is cloistered in a pinecone. With remarkable precision, Rich mixes tulips with a midlife romance, the history of photography with a Bosnian tale, thereby creating her own global fusion. Her kitchen is lavish, filled with the impulse to create and re-mix art with words that link us to memory, words for the alchemy still to come.
Tonight, the art and photographs of Myra Albert Wiggins will be presented alongside the poems from Rich’s third collection. Brian Turner writes of Rich’s work, “these are poems of praise and wonder graced by a delicate touch. Rich examines and recognizes the constructed geography of our interior lives. And, as a result, we are given mid-life’s mature and “Unexpected Song.” And Carolyn Forche agrees, “This is art in the light of conscience.” Susan Rich’s poems have received awards from the Academy of American Poets, The Times Literary Supplement, Artist Trust, 4 Culture, and PEN USA. While The Cartographer’s Tongue / Poems of the World won the Peace Corps Writers Poetry Award, Cures Include Travel was chosen as a “Best Pick” of 2006 by Forward Magazine. Last winter, her poems were published in The Harvard Review, The Southern Review, and TriQuarterly.
