In the 1990s Ted Bernard co-authored The Ecology of Hope, chronicling the stories of nine communities across the United States who shared a common goal of resolving natural resource conflicts and achieving more sustainable use of local resources. In Hope and Hard Times, he returns to these places to find that each of their sustainability initiatives had survived the hard times of the first decade of this century. Their struggles and successes reveal a remarkable resilience that will be needed in the coming post-carbon era.

Ted Bernard teaches in the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs at Ohio University.
