Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington
In observance of Australia Month at Village Books, we will read Rabbit-Proof Fence. Following an Australian government edict in 1931, black aboriginal children and children of mixed marriages were gathered up and taken to settlements to be institutionally assimilated. This is a true story about a 1600 kilometer journey to freedom by three girls aged 8, 11, and 14 along the rabbit-proof fence in Western Australia.
