Dee co-owns Village Books with Chuck. She loves good fiction and (semi-secretly) good mysteries, with the occasional memoir or biography. She'd rather spend her free time reading over just about any other thing (like cleaning house).
This is the first in a series with a delightful sleuth named Maisie Dobbs. Set against the backdrop of World War I in Britain, we see the effects of the war continuing for years in the characters' lives. --Dee
It's 1962 in Jackson, Mississippi. The Help takes us inside the lives of the black maids and their white employers and how their world began to change. Told in the voices of three gutsy women, this novel explores the risks these two black maids and one white woman take in the forefront of civil rights struggles in the South.
One of my favorite books of the year, this autobiographical novel moves back and forth from past to present examines the ups and downs of a happy marriage as one partner nears the end of life. Exquisite writing! --Dee
