Not a musician but an avid jazz listener since growing up in Vancouver in the 1950s, Milt Krieger has stalked the music on four continents before, during and after a nearly four decades teaching and research career focused on Africa, mostly at Western Washington University. Live local jazz performances from 1970, retirement in 2003 and research since 2006 led to The Less Subdued Excitement: A Century of Jazz in Bellingham and Whatcom County, Washington(2012), the first such book, covering local jazz from its pioneer World War I times to mid-2012. It turns 100 interviews, 150 photographs, a number of reproduced local art works and an original poem framing jazz into a 200 page story, better and longer than the author thought he’d tell. He suspects that readers, too, will find surprise and delight in the local jazz scene's riches.

There will be a live performance by a local trio at this event! Village Books is pleased to carry copies of The Less Subdued Excitement. Please call 360-671-2626 to obtain copies.
