Oregon’s late poet laureate, William Stafford. One of the best-known and
loved American poets, Stafford served as Poetry Consultant to the
Library of Congress, received the National Book Award for Traveling Through the Dark,
and taught for many years at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. He
grew up in Kansas, was a conscientious objector during World War II, and
was widely admired for his generosity. Bellingham poet, Jim Bertolino,
