If you love Whatcom County, history, or architecture, you won't want to miss Jeff Barclay's presentation in Lynden!

Ferndale photographer Jeffrey Barclay has created a wonderful pictorial display of 111 old barns from the most northwest county in the continental United States. Also included in the book are 11 original poems relating to old barns. The book showcases the many architectural styles of barns found in the area, each with its own beauty and character. A vital part of the farm infrastructure of Whatcom County since the early 1900's, many of these barns are still in use. However, barns are slowly disappearing from our landscape and as they crumble away photographs will be the only way to preserve their memory.

Jeff Barclay's love of barns began in 1954 when his parents bought a house with a barn in a small town in Massachusetts. That barn became an integral part of his life while growing up. Jeff's interest in photography began his my father, a man who loved taking pictures, gave him a Brownie box camera. He was in the fifth grade and started taking pictures of almost anything, and hasn't stopped. Military service brought Mr. Barclay to Whidbey Island and the Pacific Northwest. When discharged in 1971, he moved to Whatcom County. Having grown up with a barn in his backyard, he has grown to love and appreciate the architecture and style of barns in this Washington State. Several cameras later and now retired, he spends time traveling around Whatcom County looking for older barns, among other things, to photograph.
