From the snowboarding star Jeremy Jones comes The Art of Shralpinism, a new book that explores what it means to adventure in the mountains. An insightful and unique manual to being in the mountains from one of the most well-known and highly-acclaimed ski-snowboard mountaineers in the world, The Art of Shralpinism is not a technical guide to snowboarding but rather an experiential approach to creating a mountain life, full of anecdotes from Jones’ life and expert tips accompanied by Jones’ captivating art.

Jones rose to prominence early in his career, appearing in numerous films dropping into rugged, near-vertical peaks from helicopters. Over time he came to question the sport, ethics, and challenges of how he approached these slopes, culminating in the decision to avoid snowmobiles and heli-drops into the wilderness and instead pursue long, strenuous treks on foot to mountaintops before plunging off again. His commitment to ethics in outdoor adventure and his passion for the mountain environment led him to found Protect Our Winters, a global cause uniting the winter sports community against climate change, and he was recognized in 2013 as a “Champion of Change” by President Barack Obama for his work with the nonprofit organization.

Drawn from his journals, The Art of Shralpinism brings readers inside Jones’ head to learn how he thinks about avalanche forecasts, how he has learned to “read” snow, and how he prioritizes the terrain information available to him. Readers will enjoy true stories from the mountains that reflect lessons and insights into how Jones deals with everything from choosing boards to anticipating avalanches to the mental and tactical elements of following a line. They will learn about the importance of mentors, terrain and skills progression, the intensity of practice, the role of beauty, the evolution of his tactics, and the shape of failure. These are lessons learned—quick tips, sound advice, and impactful stories that have molded Jones and his career over the years.

JEREMY JONES is an award-winning snowboarder, the owner of Jones Snowboards, and the founder of Protect Our Winters, a global non-profit that unites passionate outdoor people to protect the places they love from climate change. The recipient of eleven “Big Mountain Rider of the Year” awards from Snowboarder Magazine and a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, Jones has starred in dozens of snowboard films including his highly acclaimed trilogy, Deeper, Further, and Higher.

HANA BEAMAN has been a professional snowboarder for 21 years. Originally hailing from the mountains of Southern California, she was first known for park riding. Competing in events such as X-Games, US Opens and World Champs dominated the first decade of her career, but once she got a taste for fresh pow and the backcountry she was drawn further and further north to ride bigger and better mountains and eventually focused mainly on filming in the backcountry. After another decade of filming for video parts and traveling the world, Beaman feels fortunate to be able to call Bellingham home. She first met Jeremy Jones when they were teammates in the early years of her career, and he has made a substantial impact on her life and snowboarding.
