Maeve Beaufort’s family is messy and complicated, rife with competing demands, difficult compromises, and on-the-spot judgment calls. Her father is spending his retirement on high-ticket items he doesn’t need and doesn’t remember ordering, her children’s teachers are suggesting medication, and Maeve herself has just been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. This is a novel that deals honestly and humorously with medicated American life.

Join us for a discussion after the reading on the challenges of writing about health issues and healing in a culture that prizes novelty and speed. How do we get through dark times and trials? Do you worry you will depress your readers too much? Shock them by laughing? Let’s talk about it.

Kathryn Trueblood has been awarded the Goldenberg Prize for Fiction and the Red Hen Press Short Story Award. Her most recent book, Take Daily As Needed, treats parenting while chronically ill with the desperado humor the subject deserves. Trueblood’s previous novel, The Baby Lottery, was a Book Sense Pick in 2007, and her story collection, The Sperm Donor’s Daughter, received a Special Mention for the Pushcart Prize in 2000. Trueblood’s stories and articles have been published in Poets & Writers Magazine, the Bellevue Literary Review, The Los Angeles Review, Glimmer Train, The Seattle Review, Zyzzyva, and others. She is a professor of English at Western Washington University.
