In Rooted, cutting-edge science supports a truth that poets, artists, mystics, and earth-based cultures across the world have proclaimed over millennia: life on this planet is radically interconnected. Our bodies, thoughts, minds, and spirits are affected by the whole of nature, and they affect this whole in return. In this time of crisis, how can we best live upon our imperiled, beloved earth?Award-winning writer Lyanda Lynn Haupt’s highly personal new book is a brilliant invitation to live with the earth in both simple and profound ways—from walking barefoot in the woods and reimagining our relationship with animals and trees, to examining the very language we use to describe and think about nature. She invokes rootedness as a way of being in concert with the wilderness—and wildness—that sustains humans and all of life.

In the tradition of Rachel Carson, Elizabeth Kolbert, and Mary Oliver, Haupt writes with urgency and grace, reminding us that at the crossroads of science, nature, and spirit we find true hope. Each chapter provides tools for bringing our unique gifts to the fore and transforming our sense of belonging within the magic and wonder of the natural world. Deepen your connection to the natural world with this inspiring meditation, "a path to the place where science and spirit meet" (Robin Wall Kimmerer).

Lyanda Lynn Haupt is an award-winning author, naturalist, ecophilosopher, and speaker whose writing is at the forefront of the movement to connect people with nature in their everyday lives. Her previous books include Mozart's Starling, The Urban Bestiary: Encountering the Everyday Wild, finalist for the Orion Book Award; Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness, winner of the 2010 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award; Pilgrim on the Great Bird Continent: The Importance of Everything and Other Lessons from Darwin’s Lost Notebooks; and  Rare Encounters with Ordinary Birds, winner of the 2002 Washington State Book Award.
Lyanda has created and directed educational programs for Seattle Audubon, worked in raptor rehabilitation in Vermont, and been a seabird researcher for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the remote tropical Pacific. Her writing has appeared in a variety of publications, including Orion, Discover, Utne, LA Times, Image, Huffington Post, Wild Earth, and Conservation Biology Journal.  She lives in Seattle with her husband and daughter, a mixed backyard chicken flock, and Carmen the starling, featured in Mozart's Starling.

For the past 15 years, Christian Martin has served as the Marketing and Communications Manager for North Cascades Institute. He has coordinated Institute events with some of the very best writers on the natural world including Gary Snyder, Terry Tempest Williams, Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry and Kathleen Dean Moore. His own nature and travel writing appears in several regional publications including the Cascadia Weekly and Adventures NW, and contributed to a book on the North Cascades published by The Mountaineers Books.
