Thu, 05/13/2021 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Event address:

Join us on Zoom for a celebration of the North Cascades Institute and Saul Weisberg's 35-year career of environmental education, natural history and mountain and river rambles.

After 35 years of serving as the Executive Director of the North Cascades Institute, naturalist, poet and visionary nonprofit leader Saul Weisberg is retiring. The nationally-renowned environmental education organization based right here in Whatcom and Skagit counties has grown from an idea that emerged around a campfire with Saul and friends to a robust organization that reaches over 27,000 learners every year in programs like Mountain School, Youth Leadership Adventures and a wide-range of adult classes and field excursions. Join us for a fun evening of storytelling, sharing favorite nature books and a conversation facilitated by William Dietrich and John Miles.

Saul Weisberg is a poet, ecologist, naturalist, and educator. He is also the co-founder and executive director of North Cascades Institute our co-sponsor this evening. He has worked throughout the Northwest as a wilderness climbing ranger, field biologist, commercial fisherman and fire lookout. Saul is author of North Cascades: The Story Behind the Scenery, From the Mountains to the Sea: A Guide to the Skagit River Watershed and Headwaters: Poems and Field Notes. Saul and his family live near the shores of the Salish Sea.

Bill Dietrich is a retired Seattle Times journalist and the author of 22 books, both nonfiction and fiction. He shared a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Exxon Valdez, and some of his books were on the NY Times bestseller list. He also taught environmental journalism at Huxley College. He served on the board of the North Cascades Institute during development of the Environmental Learning Center.

John Miles taught at Huxley College of the Environment for over 40 years and served as dean. A long-time North Cascades Institute Board member, he worked with Saul on many projects and programs, including the Graduate Program. Now retired, he lives and writes near Taos, New Mexico.
