Village Books is pleased to welcome sculptor Travis Skinner as our featured author for the June 24 Fairhaven Art Walk!

Head on down to the back entrance of Village Books on the Village Green where you can find a variety of Travis' sculptures* on display and meet the artist! Travis will be on hand to answer questions, talk about his art, do some carving on site, and sign copies of his book, Anglerfish Sauna

On the book:
What inspired us to make a 17 foot model of a female Anglerfish that is a wood-fired sauna on wheels? These pages will lead you on a multimedia journey through the conceptual design, the process of construction, and meaning within the sculpture. There will not be instructions on how each part is made, as all of the techniques reflect a nuanced relationship between the artist and the material. This relationship is explored through a process of design that allows the characteristics of the media to guide the construction.

The Anglerfish Sauna stimulates a connection with the natural world. It encourages the participants to step into a new environment. It forces one to unsheathe their material identity, to bow and slip into a primordial cave. An experience outside of one's self. To remove our masks. To immerse yourself into a piece of artwork, where the walls are the canvas. It is not d├ęcor, it is function. You are a part of the piece and to experience it you have to take part. Take a seat, get comfortable and warm your soul with this sauna story.

Travis Skinner was born in the slippery humid sweat of August in Baltimore, Maryland. His foundations of practice began and grew through soccer, skateboarding, carving, juggling, building forts, skipping rocks and music. These activities nurtured a deep passion and desire for physical play. Travis has always been comfortable and inspired being outside. It was in the forest and streams that his ideas really took shape. The woods are a refuge for his creativity and a provider of his materials. Travis' soul is deeply fulfilled when his hands are able to commune with mud, sticks, and rocks. Py the dog and Travis share a home they call the Leafspring. Nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, this little home is simultaneously a studio, laboratory, and workshop. The Leafspring was designed and built from the leftover materials from job sites, free boxes and scrap piles, then carted home in a Toyota minivan. It was Travis' first major life altering undertaking that set him on a course for a craft-centered, hands-on existence. He somehow skirted around the white picket fence of the American dream and decided to park in its backyard and follow his own vision.

*NOTE: The actual Anglerfish Sauna will NOT be present at this event.
