Village Books is pleased to join forces with Whatcom Writers and Publishers to co-host their monthly virtual supper club.
Each month on the second Wednesday, we host a guest author or explore a new topic to connect Whatcom Writers and industry speakers.
“Research Travel: Elevate Your Fiction While Seeing the World”
This presentation teaches writers how to incorporate their love of travel, real or virtual, local or far-flung, into their fiction. As a frequent traveler, Walsh knows how common it is for our adventures to inspire a story. Unfortunately, it’s not always clear how to incorporate our experiences in original and unexpected ways. This workshop shows authors how to travel as a researcher, break from one’s comfort zone, and enrich our stories with a level of authenticity that readers will remember forever. Armchair vagabonds needn’t be left out! This talk also covers many of the ways in which the Internet can be mined for useful information and inspiration (though the pitfalls are many!). One’s budget and willingness to travel needn’t be a limitation.
Doug Walsh is a bestselling adventure romance author, avid traveler, and indie publishing coach from Snoqualmie, Washington. His prizewinning debut novel, Tailwinds Past Florence, was directly inspired by his round-the-world bicycle tour. Following an eighteen-year writing career in the videogame industry (chronicled in his memoir The Walkthrough: Insider Tales from a Life in Strategy Guides) Walsh transitioned to fiction. A recurring speaker at PNWA and writing groups across the country, Walsh is forever excited to share his combined passion for writing and travel. His upcoming novel, Shadows of Kalalau, set in a remote corner of Kauai, is expected to release in Fall, 2021.
