Just like our “Resolutions” day, this will be an inspirational day devoted to starting the year off right in your writing life! From 11am–4pm, on the hour, we'll feature local writing experts who will present mini-workshops, from generating story ideas, to making space for writing, to a preview of Village Books’ publishing services. Come for one workshop or several and bring questions, ideas, and snacks. Participants will receive 10% off recommended Writer’s Resolutions-related books, that day only. No tickets or reservations needed.
11am: Writing While Holding Down a Day Job with Roby Blecker
So you’re not yet earning enough at the writing you love and need to do. You have to keep doing a day job that demands your time, intelligence, energy and attention. How can you still have enough creativity and enough industry to produce written work? This presentation will provide hints you can use to help your writing continue to flourish despite the other claims on you. Roby Blecker wrote her first book while managing book and journal production for an academic press, and saw the book published while running her own business as an outplacement consultant.
12pm: Learn About Writing Groups with David Beaumier, Ben Frerichs and Linda Conroy
Join some of the VB Writes writing group leaders as we discuss what each of these groups has to offer. Village Books hosts writing groups for the genres of fiction, poetry, memoir/nonfiction and speculative fiction. Held on the mezzanine level of the store near the poetry section & Book Fare Café, the groups are designed to help you meet other writers who can help you get organized, give feedback, and support your writing goals. Writing groups are free and open to newcomers and drop-ins. Village Books staff member David Beaumier is active in several writing groups. Linda Conroy leads the Village Books Poetry Writing Group. Ben Frerichs is a member of two ongoing writers’ groups with different formats: one has endured for seven years, the other for three. He has also participated in three classes structured as writers’ groups.
