Small Business Saturday is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, encouraging holiday shoppers to patronize brick-and-mortar businesses that are local. Indies First is the national campaign of activities and events in support of independent bookstores that takes place on Small Business Saturday.

Events like Indies First underscore how small, local businesses contribute to a community's cultural experiences. But there are also significant economic impacts. According to the American Independent Business Alliance: "Independent retailers return to their community more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than do chain competitors."
