This is my favorite book! Marion has crafted a blatantly hopeful examination of what it is to be human and how we connect with one another using the most gruesome setting and narrator. Our undead hero R is dissatisfied with his existence as a zombie until he makes the unusual decision to save Julie and the two form an unlikely bond. Through this bond R explores love, family, friendship, the struggle to survive, and all the little things that makes life worth living. A funny, poetic, and powerful testament to storytelling.
This story follows three generations of a Greek family from Asia Minor to the United States all leading up to Cal whose story is that is unique and beautiful and full of hardship, and one that the will stay with its reader long after the last page. Middlesex is a Pulitzer Prize winner and it sure deserved it.
A dark fairy tale-esque story about the things we forget as we grow up this book is one that lingers. Everything Neil Gaiman does is fabulous and this book is no exception! When a man goes back to the small town he grew up in memories of an unsavory nature come flooding back to him in this gripping little book. It reminded me of the bad dreams I had as a kid and demanded to be finished and resolved. It’s one I often find myself thinking about when my mind is otherwise unoccupied.
Glancing at this book initially I thought it looked interesting but nothing could have prepared me for the workout my imagination would get as it traversed the clouds with Aza Ray on her breathtaking adventure. Headley has created a world I could have only dreamed of as a child and breathed life into it and made it soar. With and wonderfully creative world and some of the realest characters I have read in a long time this is a story of love, family, adventure, and the struggle of right and wrong.
